Wood Application Projects

Wood application projects require time to master and prepare We will be going through a variety of projects in this section that you can further customize while following the given instructions below to create unique designs of your own.

1.      Decorated Wooden Plank and Blocks

Materials needed – Cricut Explore, standard grip mat, Cricut everyday vinyl in desired colors, transfer tape, paintbrush, weeding tool, acrylic craft paint in desired colors, wooden plank, square wooden blocks.

Step 1

To create a new project, after you have logged into your Cricut account using your Cricut ID on the Design Space, click on the New Project button on the top right corner of your screen, and you will be taken to a blank canvas.

Step 2

We will be using an already existing project from the Cricut library and customizing it. So click on the Projects icon on the Design Panel and click on the All Categories drop-down menu to view all existing projects that you can select from. For this example, we will click on Home Decor then type in wood in the search bar to narrow down your search to all available wood-based projects.

Step 3

You will be able to view all the projects available by clicking on them, and a pop-up window displaying all the details of the project will appear on your screen. The project selected for this example is shown in the picture below.

Step 4

Click on Customize so you can edit the project to your preference.

Step 5

The selected design will be displayed on the Canvas. You can see in the Layers Panel that this design has multiple layers that can be edited individually. You can change the color of the layers or fill in a pattern. Click on the Linetype Swatch to view the color palette and select the desired color for your design.

Step 6

Now click on the Make It button to view the required mats and material displayed on the screen.

Step 7

Click Continue at the bottom of your screen. After you have loaded the vinyl to the Cricut machine. Turn the smart set dial of your Cricut Explore machine to Vinyl to cut the design and follow the prompts on the Design Space application.

Note – If images and/or fonts used for your design are not free and available for purchase only, then the Continue button will not appear, and instead, a Purchase button will be visible. Once you have paid for the image or font the Continue button will be available to you.

Step 8

Connect your Cricut device to your computer and place the vinyl on top of the cutting mat and load into the Cricut machine by pushing against the rollers. The Load/Unload button would already be flashing, so just press that button first, followed by the flashing Go button.

Step 9

Carefully weed out the non-design portion from the sheet. To easily paste your design on the wooden plank without stretching the pieces, put the transfer tape on top of the cut design.

Step 10

Using the paintbrush apply a thin layer of paint of your chosen background color over the opening of your stencil. Once the base paint has dried, apply 2-3 additional layers to get a good background color on the wood. After you have cleaned the wood, slowly peel the paper backing on the vinyl from one end to the other in a rolling motion to ensure even placement. Now, use the scraper tool on top of the transfer tape to remove any bubbles and then just peel off the transfer tape.

2.      Festive Wooden Signboard

 

Materials needed – Cricut Explore, standard grip machine mat, Cricut linen vinyl in desired colors, transfer tape, weeding tool, scraper, wooden sign.

Step 1

To create a new project, after you have logged into your Cricut account using your Cricut ID on the Design Space, click on the New Project button on the top right corner of your screen, and you will be taken to a blank canvas.

Step 2

Click on the Images icon on the Design Panel and type in welcome in the search bar to narrow your search for the images used in the project. Select any other image that may catch your eye and click on Insert Images at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3

Your selected images will appear on the Canvas, and you can notice from the Layers Panel on the right that this image has multiple layers, which can be edited individually. You can edit your image as needed, for example, you could resize the image based on the size of your wooden plaque and color it as shown in the picture below.

Step 4

Click on the Save button and give the desired name to the project, for example, Wedding Welcome Sign and click Save again.

Step 5

Now, your design is ready to be printed. Simply click on the Make It button on the top of your screen. You will see the required mats and material displayed on the screen.

Step 6

Click Continue at the bottom right corner of the screen. After you have loaded the vinyl to the Cricut machine. Turn the smart set dial of your Cricut Explore machine to Vinyl to cut the design and follow the prompts on the Design Space application.

Note – If images and/or fonts used for your design are not free and available for purchase only, then the Continue button will not appear, and instead, a Purchase button will be visible. Once you have paid for the image or font the Continue button will be available to you.

Connect your Cricut device to your computer and place the vinyl on top of the cutting mat and load into the Cricut machine by pushing against the rollers. The Load/Unload button would already be flashing, so just press that button first, followed by the flashing Go button.

Step 8

Carefully remove the excess vinyl from the sheet. To easily paste your design on the wooden plaque without stretching the pieces, put the transfer tape on top of the cut design. After you have cleaned the surface, slowly peel the paper backing on the vinyl from one end to the other in a rolling motion to ensure even placement. Now, use the scraper tool on top of the transfer tape to remove any bubbles and then just peel off the transfer tape. Viola! You have your own beautiful wedding sign.

5.       Decorated Wooden Plaque (Salute to our soldiers)

Materials needed – Cricut Explore, Cricut Easy Press, standard grip mat, light grip mat, Cricut Easy Press mat, everyday Iron-On (black or desired color), color laser printer, printer paper, Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium, Mod Podge Antique Matte, paintbrush, weeding tool, sponge, foam bush, variety of embellishments, wooden plaque or slice (min 6 x 5 inches).

Step 1

To create a new project, after you have logged into your Cricut account using your Cricut ID on the Design Space, click on the New Project button on the top right corner of your screen, and you will be taken to a blank canvas.

Step 2

Let’s add an image of our own (if you have any family member or friend in the service, you can use their picture or find a picture on the internet). Click on the Upload icon from the Designer Panel on the left of the screen, then click on the Upload Image button and select Browse to select your image on your computer. Save your uploaded image as Complex. The image used for this project is available on the internet and shown in the picture below. Click Continue and select Save as a Print then Cut image and click on Save at the bottom of your screen. The uploaded image will be displayed under the Recently uploaded Images section, so simply select the image and click on Insert Images to retrieve the image on the canvas.

Step 3

Click on the Images icon on the Design Panel and select the Categories tab. Scroll down to find Patriotic and click on it. Then type in the home of the brave in the search bar so you can easily find the other image used in this project, as shown in the picture below. (Feel free to choose any other image that may catch your eye). Click on Insert Images at the bottom of the screen.

Step 4

Your selected images will appear on the Canvas, and you can notice from the Layers Panel on the right that our selected images are single layer. Let’s edit the design now! First, resize the uploaded image and move it on top of the USA shape image. Then, click on Arrange from the Edit Bar on top of the screen and select Send to Back.

Step 5

Now, select the entire design and click on Slice at the bottom left of the screen. You will see additional layers under the Layers Panel. Select layers that do not need to be cut or printed as part of the design by and click on the Delete button to remove them, as shown in the picture below. Only the layer containing the uploaded image in the shape of the USA should be left on the canvas.

Note – In this example, we only deleted the 2nd layer from the picture below.

Step 6

Click on the Save button at the top of your screen and give the desired name to the project, for example, Patriotic Plaque – 1 and click Save again.

Step 7

Now, your design is ready to be printed. Simply click on the Make It button on your screen. You will see the required mats and material displayed on the screen. Make sure you click on the Mirror button under the Material Size on the left of the screen and as shown in the picture below.

Step 8

After you have loaded the printer paper to the Cricut machine, click Continue at the bottom of your screen to print the design.

Note – The USA image used is available for purchase, so click on Purchase at the bottom right of the screen to buy the images before you can print the design. And once you have made the purchase, the Continue button will be available to you.

Step 9

Once your Cricut Explore has been connected to your computer. Turn the smart set dial of your Cricut Explore machine to Vinyl to cut the design and follow the prompts on the Design Space application. Place the black vinyl on top of the cutting mat with the shiny side or clear liner facing down on the mat and load the mat into the Cricut device by pushing against the rollers. The Load/Unload button will start flashing so just press it. Then press the Go button, which would already be flashing.

Step 10

Carefully remove the excess vinyl from the sheet using the weeder tool, so only the design is left on the clear liner. Now use the Cricut Easy Press and Easy Press Mat to transfer the iron-on layers to the wooden plaque. The recommended temperature for everyday iron-on material and wood base material is 3o0 °F to be applied for 40 seconds with firm pressure and preheating your Easy Press for 5 seconds. Then slowly remove the liner while it is still warm.

Note – To find the recommended temperature and time of application with Cricut Easy Press, you can use the Interactive Quick Reference Guide available on the official Cricut website.

Step 11

Now, using a foam brush dipped in the Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium saturate the printed side of the image. Now, put the paper containing the printed image on the wood with the printed side facing down, then position at the center of the iron-on vinyl and smooth it out with your hands.

Step 12

Allow to dry for at least 24 hours, then use a moist sponge to gently rub off the printer paper from the wood and let the wood dry out completely.

Step 13

Now, to seal the entire wooden plaque, use the Mod Podge Antique Matte and let the wood dry and Viola! You have your own unique wooden plaque that honors the servicemen in your family.
