Surfin’ Shorts

July 29, 2016

surfin shortsHa, like we’re anywhere close to surfing here in northern Alberta. Maybe at the indoor pool’s wave runner? Anyways, when I was asked to join in the swimwear tour, I almost said no, because I just bought the kids new swim clothes and besides, swim fabric is probably like formal wear fabric and not much fun to sew with, haha! But then I saw the cute swim shorts that Jess from Gracious Threads had done and I was all over that sign-up sheet! And y’all, she has a ladies pattern too! Do you know how hard it is to find swim shorts that will fit my hips and still cover my butt? Not everyone wants shorty-shorts! So she has done three lengths with optional built-in swim bottoms so everyone can have what they want 😉

I chose to repurpose a pair of clearance ladies swim shorts (that were shoooooort) for these, so that’s how everything matches. I was able to reuse the bias tape and cord for the waistband.

The bias along the edges and hem was by far the trickiest part of this pattern, made so by the slippery nature of the swim fabric. I’m thinking that wash-away Wonder Tape is key here! So go slow and take your time on that part, but overall, if you’ve sewn with knit (if you choose to do the integrated swim bottoms) before, you’ll be able to complete these with no problem. The instructions are very detailed with lots of illustrations. I eliminated the faux fly since I was working with limited fabric for this pair. I have some fabric to make myself a pair and can’t wait to finally have swim shorts that don’t belong to my husband, haha!

Best of all is how neat they are inside. This pair I made with the optional swim bottom, but they are a little on the short side (the shorts I was re-purposing were at fault here!) than what we normally wear swimming, so these have been used as pajama shorts….I may take out the swim bottoms just for comfort’s sake, but all in all, I’m extremely happy with how professional-looking these turned out!

Thanks for another great pattern, Jess!

  1. That color is great! Swimwear lining is a beast to work with… which may be part of the reason I haven’t made any swimwear yet. These look really well-made!
