Skirting the Issue – a Chevron Skirt Tutorial

July 18, 2014

Hi there! Were you looking for this earlier? Don’t worry, it’s just Friday and of COURSE my computer decided on a different schedule! Anyway, I’m so happy to be sharing a skirt tutorial as part of Simple Simon’s Skirting the Issue event!

This is not my tutorial, but one that I felt needed to be passed on….it’s so cute! Originally posted over on the Sewing Rabbit blog by Designs by Sessa. Also, this is not a skirt tutorial as much as it is a way to “fancy up” your skirts – any skirt!

This is something that has been sitting in  my Pinterest folder for so long and I finally tried it – what a great addition to any skirt! So, this is not MY tutorial, but I do have a few tips on it. You can find the original tutorial over here.

I started with the Betty Skirt pattern by the Shaffer Sisters. The chevron was added after sewing the side skirt panels together.

I fiddled around with the size of the chevron, and came up with how to make your own pattern in the size you like. Sometimes you need a smaller scale for smaller sizes.

Here is a chart:

This was the size I used and the original from the tutorial (3″ x paper length, 3″ apart cuts, 1.5″ deep into center) , but you can also do this in 2″ measurements with success!

I didn’t photograph the rest of the tutorial, because the original post over on The Sewing Rabbit is quite clear. It’s a really fun technique to play around with!

Isn’t this Betty Skirt by the Shaffer Sisters the sweetest? Such a quick sew! It’s currently in testing again to tweak some more sizes, but look out for it soon!

I added a fun trim in between the yoke and skirt, and used snaps instead of buttons (if you want to continue using buttons, don’t buy a Kam Snap press and snaps….they are addictive!)

So there you go! A fun way to add some interest to any skirt! My daughter claimed this as her own, but once we talked about how some other little girl is going to get a pretty skirt, she was OK with letting it go….but I think I may need to make another!

Don’t forget to head over to Simple Simon & Co for more skirt fun!

  1. This skirt is the reason I bought this pattern. I’m trying to figure how to size it up to an adult size. I LOVE this version of the skirt! Thank you for the tutorial.
